The excitement of chrysanthemums

.

I believe most people in Hong Kong have reservations about chrysanthemums, thinking they are flowers used only for worship. In fact, chrysanthemums hold an important place in Chinese classical literature and culture, and are considered one of the “Four Gentlemen” along with plum blossoms, orchids and bamboo. According to the “Flower Classic” written by the Southern Tang scholar Zhang Yi during the Five Dynasties, chrysanthemums are classified into nine ranks, with the chrysanthemum occupying the highest position.

Our poet Tao Yuanming cherished chrysanthemums dearly, and his numerous poems about them reveal his deep appreciation.

In Japan, Chrysanthemums are even considered the national flower; just look at their passports. They symbolise diligence, bravery and wisdom.

There are up to three thousand varieties of chrysanthemum. The ones we use for worship are just one kind. I believe that if you open your heart and explore, you will be amazed at the variety of Chrysanthemums that await you!

Once a dear customer asked me to create a bouquet for her big day. She wanted a special colour combination. To achieve this, we had to use the blue peony chrysanthemums that were in season. My dear customer is a very modern and happy young woman and in the end both she and her friends were extremely pleased with the result.

.

So flowers really are worth a lifetime of appreciation; that is the essence of the art of flowers.
